Welcome to the Women in Governance (WinG) website
What is WinG?
WinG is a voluntary and community sector partnership project between Kingston Voluntary Action, Merton Voluntary Service Council and Richmond Council for Voluntary Service (RCVS). Funded initially by the Association of London Government in 2003, it has now been recognised by the Home Office as a GoldStar Exemplar Project for supporting socially excluded women through its accredited training course into decision-making roles.
What does WinG do?
It encourages the women to recognise their experience of using local services is a valuable resource. The course equips them with the knowledge, skills and confidence to pursue roles in local governance - namely school governors, local councillors, charity trustees or members of a local Primary Care Trust decision –making body.
WinG Achievements
The course has been running since 2003 and during that time WinG has recruited 250 women onto the programme.
- Over 150 women have completed the 10-week training
- Just under half this number have English as a second language
- Over 100 women have achieved accredited learning
- Over 50 are now involved in their communities as volunteers, local decision makers and paid employees in the community sector
